Making new traditions as we start the festive season…
Traditionally, the last Sunday of the Church year (the following four Sundays represent advent days and the beginning of the new church year), is the day to make your Christmas pudding, not least because of the a Bible passage which uses the line “Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people” .
So, on Sunday we headed to a friends local playgroup who had a charity day of pudding and mince pie making, Christmas crafts and festive treats. It was a lovely way to start off the festive period, and felt like a lovely, homely thing to do. All ingredients were provided, along with the necessary bowls, vegetable peelers, wooden spoons and chopping boards, while a large table in the middle of the room, decked out in festive greenery, was the main mixing station. Everyone crowded round, scrutinising the recipe, sneaking peeks at their neighbour’s pudding and comparing notes, while the little ones stood on chairs and helped out – mostly by eating the ingredients.
Munchkin – fresh from an epic mid-day nap – was a little shell-shocked by it all, but enjoyed watching R stir and chop, while helping out with ‘testing’ the sultanas.
Once the pudding is mixed together, you need to cover it – with tasteful ribbon and material, naturally – and then take it home to be boiled for six hours, before leaving it in a cool, dark place until Christmas day, when it needs another three hours boiling.
I have to admit, I’m not the biggest Christmas pudding fan, but it was fun to make our own and somehow it’ll much more fun to cook it up in a month from now. Plus, I loved getting an idea of what cooking with Munchkin will be like.
